Melbourne Capital Group recycled over 100kg of textiles with Kloth Circularity

In an effort to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility, our team at the Melbourne Capital Group Kuala Lumpur office recently organised a clothes donation drive in collaboration with Kloth Circularity. This initiative not only aimed to declutter our wardrobes but also to make a positive impact on the environment.

The drive resulted in the recycling of 103.7 kg of textiles, clothes, bags, and other items. This collective effort reflects our commitment to reducing waste and supporting circular economy practices. By partnering with Kloth Circularity, we ensured that these items would be repurposed rather than ending up in incinerators or landfills.

What Kloth Circularity Does

Established on 11th December 2013, Kloth is a women-led social enterprise that aspires to become the catalyst for textiles, clothing, and plastics circular economy in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and the UAE. Kloth Circularity is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices in the textile and fashion industry, with a strong commitment to creating a positive impact on the environment, society, and economy. Their initiatives align with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on:

  • Textile Recycling: Kloth Circularity facilitates the recycling of textiles, ensuring that discarded clothing and materials are transformed into new products rather than being sent to landfills. This process helps conserve resources and reduces environmental impact.
  • Awareness and Education: The organisation actively raises awareness about the importance of sustainable fashion and responsible consumption. They provide educational resources and workshops to inform the public about the benefits of recycling and the impact of textile waste.
  • Community Engagement: Kloth Circularity engages with local communities to encourage participation in recycling initiatives. They organise events and drives, like the one with Melbourne Capital Group, to foster a culture of sustainability and collective action.
  • Partnerships: By collaborating with businesses, NGOs, and individuals, Kloth Circularity aims to create a network of support for sustainable practices in the textile industry. These partnerships enhance their ability to make a broader impact on environmental conservation.

Environmental Benefits

The impact of our donation drive yielded the following environmental benefits:

  • Waste Diversion: The amount of textiles recycled is equivalent to 622 pieces of t-shirts that were successfully diverted from incinerators and landfills.
  • Water Conservation: Our efforts equate to 15 full loads of a 7 kg washing machine.
  • Cost Savings: By diverting these textiles from landfills, we avoided an estimated RM16.02 in landfill costs.
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction: The recycling efforts resulted in the avoidance of 232 kg of CO2-e greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Daily Emissions Avoidance: Our initiative is equivalent to avoiding 11 days of average greenhouse gas emissions for a Malaysian.
  • Transportation Emissions Offset: The emissions avoided through our recycling efforts are comparable to driving a 1.3L Proton Saga for 1161 km.

Big thank you to Teha from our team for putting this together. We encourage everyone to consider similar initiatives in their communities, as every small effort counts towards a healthier planet. Together, we can make a difference.
