The New Generation of Women Investors

Despite these challenges, there are promising developments. A study by Fidelity found that 60% of women now invest in the stock market. Fidelity also found that investing is gaining traction amongst younger women, with 71% of Gen Z women and 63% of millennials actively investing. This shift reflects a broader cultural change where younger women are more empowered, independent, and proactive about securing their financial futures. We’re seeing more female leaders in the corporate world, more women starting businesses, and a growing community of entrepreneurs openly sharing their financial journeys.

The internet has become a game-changer for financial literacy. Once locked behind jargon-heavy books or expensive consultations, financial education is now more accessible than ever. Today, there is an abundance of finance content specifically designed for women – whether it’s social media accounts, Youtube channels, or podcasts that make understanding money feel approachable and relatable.

Those extra years of investing make a massive difference. Understand how compounding interest help you earn larger returns, the longer you invest.

The Female Investing Advantage

“One-third of my clients are women, but a higher portion are the financial decision makers, even if they aren’t the ones ‘earning’, as they focus on the family. Traditional family models of men being the breadwinner and financial decision maker are long gone, and rightly so.”

Jamie’s observation aligns perfectly with what financial research continues to reveal: Women now manage over half of household wealth in the United States, and in 40% of households with children under 18, a woman serves as the primary breadwinner.

Despite these advancements, many women still report feeling disconnected from traditional financial services. At Melbourne Capital Group, we recognise this and have developed approaches that respect each client’s unique financial journey.

We’ve observed that women in financial decision-making roles generally fall into two distinct categories, each with specific needs and preferences:

The Independent Financial Decision-Maker

  • Values comprehensive information with clear, consistent communication.
  • Seeks to understand the underlying reasons for investment performance and may benchmark against market indices or peer portfolios.
  • Carries the responsibility of her household’s financial health and benefits from collaborative planning that provides space for personal decision-making.

These clients flourish with advisors who build genuine trust and foster confidence in financial choices through education and supportive guidance.

The Collaborative Financial Decision-Maker

  • Open dialogue that acknowledges their equal role in the financial partnership.
  • Educational resources enhance their financial literacy and decision-making capacity.
  • Relationship-centred advising that considers family priorities.

For these clients, we focus on addressing specific concerns while maintaining perspective on long-term financial goals and progress milestones.
